As a psychiatrist of thirty years and a therapist experienced in various methods, I believe in the positive effect of Psychotherapy in helping clients deal with challenging situations and psychological ailments.
Therapy first and foremost gives the individual something that all humans are in deep need of: the opportunity to be seen, witnessed, accepted as they are, to be listened to without judgment, to be held and supported in goodwill. This soothes the individual and helps them put things into perspective. Especially while going through life crises, rough times and psychological and physical ailments we all may need this type of support. Once stability is achieved by the help of this holding, therapy helps the individuals to establish the very important missing link between their current suffering and the impact of a plethora of factors that have their roots in their way of looking at themselves, their relationships and life in general, in their experiences which shaped them, in their family of origin and its circumstances which affected them, in their current life choices that maintain the suffering. Opening up a space of introspection helps clients gain insight and clarity, awareness and realizations. In the course of time, through guidance and application of scientifically validated techniques, coping skills are established, problems solving skills are strengthened, self-esteem is built, interpersonal and general functioning is enhanced, taking personal responsibility for changing what seems to sustain the suffering is encouraged. Ultimately changes in individuals’ approach to their lives, their functioning, their relationships and themselves emerge, which improve their quality of life and their overall satisfaction.
As a Holistic Psychiatrist and eclectic therapist with additional shamanic energy healing background, I guide my clients to explore the role of dynamic (underlying emotional processes of inner life), cognitive (thought patterns related), interpersonal, social, cultural, lifestyle related, transpersonal / spiritual and energetic aspects of their psychological and physical wellbeing and disease. My aim is to offer a space of deep reflection, benevolent support as well as teachings and tools, which will help individuals understand their own needs and desires, embrace their own intrinsic wisdom and claim their own power of helping and healing themselves.
In the first exploration session I listen to the situation that lead the client to contact me, offer a diagnostic if there seems to be a psychological ailment, or a “dynamics framework” of factors contributing to the situation at hand (for example in Couple’s Therapy). I then offer a therapy plan and elaborate on what I suggest we should work on and how we could do that. Therapy sessions are generally for one hour and their frequency is decided together with the client.
